Field Notes: Indian Paintbrush

Field Notes: Indian Paintbrush

There are some flowers that seem almost too bold for the landscapes they call home.

Indian Paintbrush isn't one of them.

Across Wyoming, it rises from sagebrush, mountain meadows, and open hillsides in brilliant shades of red, orange, coral, yellow, and even pink. It doesn't overpower the landscape. Somehow, it belongs there completely, adding flashes of color that make you stop, smile, and look a little closer.

I've always loved that about Indian Paintbrush.

Most people picture the familiar scarlet blooms, but if you spend enough time paying attention, you'll discover that Indian Paintbrush comes in remarkable shades and subtle variations. Every hillside tells a slightly different story. Every patch of wildflowers feels uniquely its own.

When I began planning Copper Crow Fiber Co., I knew I wanted a colorway inspired by Wyoming's state flower. I shared that idea with Shelly Ketcheson of Wicked Tint Yarns, and together we brought it to life. Shelly's artistry transformed the inspiration into a yarn that captures the warmth, movement, and vibrant spirit of Indian Paintbrush in bloom.

That collaboration is exactly the kind of story I hope Copper Crow tells.

Beautiful things are rarely created in isolation. They grow from shared ideas, skilled hands, and a love of the places that inspire us.

Every skein of Indian Paintbrush carries a little of Wyoming with it, and I'm honored that it became one of the first yarns to find a home on the shelves of Copper Crow.
